Manufacturing Case Study

Pumps Manufacturer

The company manufactures
pumps for use in domestic heating systems. They also make a range of submersible pumps that are expected to be under water for many years.

They use Zebra thermal transfer printers and Zygology Systems resin ribbons to produce hundreds of product/customer label variations.

Labelling central heating pumps is a relatively straightforward affair. A polyester label is affixed to a machined surface on the pumps. As the pumps operate at a maximum of 80 degrees Celsius the demands placed upon the label may seem relatively minor. However, a pump can be expected to last for over 15 years so gradual adhesive degradation is simply not acceptable.

Labelling submersible pumps is a rather more difficult matter. As these pumps are exported all over the World, with a key market being the US, any problems caused by labels detaching would have very costly product recall implications.

Zygology Systems devised a label/adhesive combination that guarantees the labels integrity on the pumps over an extended period. By carrying out extensive accelerated laboratory and on-site testing a premium product was developed that exceeded the specifications of both the manufacturer and their US distributors. (The US specification was, in fact, proven to be inadequate by our test proceedures).

The overall label cost is insignificant when compared with the annual savings the customer makes by eliminating product recalls.
