This company offers a huge range of products, simplified ordering and fast shipment. To stay ahead of the competition, it continually improves its facilities and systems. As the company's volume of orders increased, their existing processes became too labour intensive. The company designed and built an entirely new DC (Distribution Centre) with a state-of-the-art order processing system. As barcode labelling would be a critical element of the new system, it was decided that Paragon print and apply systems offered the best return on investment. In the new DC, Paragon units seamlessly integrate with carton erecting systems, WMS (Warehouse Management System) software, fixed mount barcode scanners, a stand-alone printer and a network of conveyors. The DC has eight conveyor lines, each headed by a carton erector. Data from the WMS software selects the appropriate line and automatically erects the right number of cartons in the proper sizes for the order. The cartons proceed along the conveyors to the in-line Paragon systems. With data received from the WMS software, the Paragon prints and applies a barcode label to an exterior flap on each carton. The labels are immediately checked with in-line scanners. The eight individual lines are then combined into two lines. The Paragon produced labels are scanned again and each carton is diverted to an appropriate downstream conveyor for order fulfilment. When labelled cartons arrive at the various fulfilment stations, Operations personnel again scan the all-important Paragon barcode label, which cues the host WMS system to tell the operator what products to put in the carton. Once cartons are filled, they continue along the conveyor where a printer automatically prints the packing note, cuts it and drops it in the carton as it passes. The cartons are then sealed and diverted to the appropriate shipping dock door. With
the flexibility, versatility and reliability of the Paragon's modular
design and integration capability, the system is now capable of processing
22,000 cartons per day. |
