Verification Case Study

RJS SV100 On-Line Verification System at FMCG manufacturer

An FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) company was applying barcode labels to the lower right quadrant of cartons, according to their customer specifications. Their customer, a major supermarket chain, required a barcode that met the ANSI grade of "C" or better. However, they were being fined for supplying out-of-tolerance bar codes, despite the bar codes being successfully scanned in-house prior to despatch.

To resolve the problem it was decided that they should continually monitor the product as it travelled along conveyors and check the quality of every barcode that had been applied.

The solution was found by using an RJS SV100 on-line verifier. Input from a standard photo cell is taken into the SV100 and the unit scans and analyses the code. The SV100 provides pulse outputs for good reads, quality errors or no read conditions. The pulses are used to activate a light stack and a relay. If a bad barcode is scanned this stops the conveyor, in order to alert the operators to a bar code quality error and enable them to take the appropriate action.

The SV100 provides outputs based on 10 programmable quality parameters. The unit uses a combination of ANSI and traditional criteria to check for bar code quality and printer errors and malfunctions.
